By now, many of you have heard of Olaplex but few know what it is, how it works and what its benefits are to your hair. Let’s start with what is inside your strands and how they are effected by heat, chemicals and the environment, and how this treatment can make them better.

Your hair is made up of a system of strong, interwoven protein rich fibers. These proteins are known as polypeptides and they are held together by three main side bonds: salt, hydrogen and disulphide. The salt and hydrogen bonds make up the most of this protein, yet they are the weakest bonds. They are the physical bonds that allow us to style our hair in curls or straighten it, at least until our next shampoo!  The disulphide bond is a chemical one and it’s what makes your hair retain its straight, wavy or curly shape when the hair grows from the follicle. This bond needs to be broken with chemicals to change your hair’s shape or color. This bond is very strong and it’s responsible for your hair’s strength and ability to stretch. The hydrogen bond is a much weaker one and can easily be broken by water.

So, what happens when color, bleach or texturizing services are done to your hair? The outside layer, called the cuticle is lifted and the inside bonds are affected by the ammonia and hydrogen peroxide used in chemical applications. Bonds are broken, oxidation occurs and your hair’s strength and resiliency is changed, resulting in dry, brittle hair. This is because the disulphide bonds have been broken and must be fixed. And that is where Olaplex comes into play.  Olaplex is a two step bond multiplier and works by finding single sulfur hydrogen bonds and cross linking them to form disulfide bonds during and after a chemical process. When it is added to color, bleach or texturizing chemicals (such as perms or straighteners) it helps mitigate the damage that is done to the hair during the process and afterwards as well. Used as a stand-alone treatment, it can make your hair considerably stronger and healthier without weighing it down. Olaplex is free of silicone, sulfates, phthalates, DEA, aldehydes and is never tested on animals.

Consider having us add this amazing treatment to your color service for added insurance, or pamper your hair with a therapeutic brushing followed by an Olaplex treatment to repair chemical, heat and summer damage. Afterwards, show your hair some love and take home No.3 and continue pampering yourself once a week for your best hair ever!
